Barone checks in: still working, being "very thoughtful about every aspect," and recently revisiting the chocolate recipe-book UI to make it seamless, clear and intuitive. No release date. This is the latest official update as of writing.

A candid update reassures fans: HC is not abandoned and will not be folded into Stardew Valley (a separate engine, written from scratch). He declines a release date — "the game will come out when it's done" — and clarifies a 2025 "I hope so" about a five-year question was NOT a 2030 commitment.
A blog entry and interviews reveal multiple ways to craft chocolate — a whimsical "intuitive" method alongside more conventional, mechanical processes. He notes he is now freer to focus on HC as his Stardew 1.6 duties have died down (as of spring 2025).

Everything We Know So Far
Chronological development updates and official blog announcements from ConcernedApe, cross-checked against major games media.
ConcernedApe (Eric Barone) announces Haunted Chocolatier with a gameplay reveal trailer. It shows a haunted-castle chocolate shop, ghost shop assistants carrying confections, snowy-wilderness gathering, and combat with shields and bows. In his words: "It's called ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier."
A dev blog details the combat, which Barone says has "a greater focus" than Stardew Valley and is coded and drawn from scratch. The shield/stun mechanic rewards patient players who wait for an opening; other off-hand items will support different play styles.
A holiday update shares early looks at the chocolate-making systems: the kitchen "food laboratory" where confections are crafted, plus more on the gathering-and-crafting loop.
Barone explains he was pulled away from HC by the Stardew Valley 1.6 update, which snowballed from a modding-tech update into substantial new content, then bug-fixing and porting. He reaffirms HC remains a priority — "in my own private world it's a special place."

Gameplay Mechanics Preview
Gather ingredients → craft chocolates → manage your shop. Here is the loop as revealed so far.
Venture into wilderness biomes and snow-covered forests to fight monsters and harvest cocoa, berries, and ghost essence for your confections.
Process ingredients inside your haunted-castle kitchen using various recipes — an “intuitive” path and a more conventional, mechanical path — to create luxury chocolates and specialty sweets.
Set up displays, price your confections, and employ friendly ghost staff to run the shop floor while you befriend townspeople and pursue relationships.
Combat is a bigger focus than in Stardew Valley. A shield lets you block attacks to stun enemies and open a counter-window; bows and other off-hand items complement different play styles. Boss encounters (e.g. a giant bee) are confirmed.
Known Villagers & Characters
Characters identified from the reveal trailer and official screenshots so far.
The first named character in the reveal trailer — Lily greets you with a mysterious invitation ("So… you received my invitation?"). She lives in a neon, plant-filled home. Among the revealed cast she is frequently cited as a top romance candidate for Haunted Chocolatier’s relationship system.
Burk runs the village forge and weapon shop. Our Burk blacksmith guide covers how he is expected to supply weapons and gear for your wilderness expeditions — he is "been at the furnace all morning" per his trailer dialogue.
A dark-haired villager who remains something of a mystery. In the trailer she poses a life-in-the-city question with three Maddie dialogue options, letting you shape your reply — a first glimpse of Haunted Chocolatier’s branching town conversations.
Jett is Dr. Tungsten’s research assistant — a spiky-haired tinkerer who admits to borrowing the lab equipment for his own research ("Don’t tell Dr. Tungsten"). A clear hint at the game’s science and experimentation side.
Dr. Tungsten works in a monitor-filled research lab — the lab location shown in the reveal footage — overseeing unknown experiments. He is the town’s doctor, so expect him after tough expeditions.
Nigel is the local bartender behind the bar of what looks like an underground speakeasy ("You must be our new chocolatier"). His portrait hints at a storied past — a likely source of town gossip.
Ethereal helpers who assist inside the haunted castle — carrying chocolates overhead and running the shop floor while you befriend the townspeople. They are the unique "ghost shop helpers" of Haunted Chocolatier.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Haunted Chocolatier connected to Stardew Valley?+
It is a brand-new standalone game by ConcernedApe. It shares the cozy pixel-art style and the "town game" spirit of Stardew Valley, but it is coded from scratch (a new C#/MonoGame engine) with a different theme, combat system, and setting — a chocolate shop rather than a farm. (Fans often describe the relationship as "the moon to Stardew's sun": a different mood, not a sequel or shared world.)
What is the official release date?+
There is currently no official release date. ConcernedApe is working solo and has stated he will release it only when it is 100% complete and polished — “it will come out when it’s done.”
Will Haunted Chocolatier have multiplayer?+
No. ConcernedApe has confirmed Haunted Chocolatier is being developed strictly as a single-player action RPG and shopkeeping simulation. (Stardew Valley gained multiplayer after launch; HC is not following that path.)
